This morning I read about the local chief of police continuing a probe into practices of the police force he commands. It seems that some officers used pepper spray to make the sleeping bags of transients unusable.

What I find appalling is that the comments, made by my neighbors, seem to find it acceptable to use any kind of force to get rid of homeless people. If the police do it, it must be okay. And anyone who questions the tactics used, are not supportive of the people who have sworn to serve and protect.

I don't understand that thinkiing. Does anyone remember the Cuban Missile Crisis? I was living in Denver, and the top local story at the time was about a theft ring in the Denver police force. Denver cops were actively stealing and selling merchandise and then covering up their actions. The local joke was that all Kennedy had to do to get rid of the missiles in Cuba was to send the Denver police force there to steal them.

I admire people who want to serve their fellow citizens. Certainly most cops are genuinely concerned about the safety of their neighbors. But when it is obvious that some bad practices have lodged themselves into the standard practice of a police force, citizens need to be concerned and demand oversight.

Many cities have citizen oversight committees that review police reports. They head abuses off at the pass. Maybe the entire burden should not be on the shoulders of Chief Camper. Maybe it is time for the city to establish a citizen's oversight committee.

Okay, so I’m going to sound like a “tax and spend liberal” again. What is wrong with our education system that creates so much wrong thinking about things like taxes? How do you have a government without revenue? Grover Norquist , a leader in the conservative movement, is famous for his comment that he wants to shrink government "down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub."

So what happens when we shrink government to that point? Street lights go out in Colorado Springs. Grand Junction can’t fix pot holes. Delta can’t fix pot holes. We lay off 60 people in Grand Junction. We lay off the executive director of the organization charged with bringing business to Delta.

Is that what we really want? To turn into a third-world nation where we can’t afford teachers, or cops, or economic development, or roads? It seems that is what the local Republican Party wants. They are out in force protesting taxes on luxury items like candy and soft drinks. How do they propose that we pay for street lights, roads, schools, and economic development without collecting sales taxes? It is time that we grow up and tackle our growing problems with a concerted joint effort to actually make government work. Yes, be fiscally responsible, but taxes aren’t evil.  We need taxes to run government. As much as Republicans don’t like government, it is the only thing that keeps nations civilized.

As I’ve said before, all we get for low taxes is a third world country.
