Fracking

Fracking is in the news again, probably because of the HBO release of GasLand. Major magazines and newspapers have now started reporting on problems with water in areas where fracking is used extensively. Even though people in Colorado have suffered from polluted water wells, caused by fracking, the problem wasn’t highlighted nationally because there just weren’t enough people here on the Western Slope to draw the attention of major media.

Today, however the river that supplies water to major cities on the east coast is being endangered by fracking. Now that New York City and Pittsburg are being threatened, we are all hearing about the dangers of fracking. Millions live in the east coast cities, only slightly more than 100,000 people live in our major urban area.

There is a conservation group that rates how endangered rivers are. The upper Colorado River is number six out of the ten most endangered rivers. Ironically, the Colorado River made the list because of potential diversions to the front range, not because of the fracking operations on the edge of the river.

The eleven minute video linked below tells a story that should be familiar to people in Western Colorado. We’ve had our own citizens become ill after their water wells became polluted. It is time to look at the real cost of Drill, Baby, Drill and enforce regulations that protect our water. It is time to slow down drilling, and speed up the conversion to green energy.
