I got an E-mail this morning from the Secretary of the Latin Anglo Alliance. It was announcing an October general meeting at their headquarters on October 28. It included a short note about the Golf Tournament that was held over the week-end. The note said it was a success, but didn’t seem to actually believe that. It also indicated that everyone who worked the event was tired.

The Latin Anglo Alliance is just like lots of other organizations where a few people do all of the work, and others brag about belonging, but rarely show up for meetings. When I sent out the notice of this Golf Tournament, I wanted to link to their website. I didn’t because their ownership of their domain seems to be in limbo, and the website is not there. I’m sure this is because the few people who do all of the work are elderly, and don’t have the computer skills to manage a website.

This organization has been around since 1954, helping underprivileged kids get to college. There is a huge achievement gap between Latino kids and kids from the dominant culture when it comes to education. This is one organization that is working to fill that gap, and it is an organization in distress. I see lots of Latinos at their meetings, but not so many Anglos.

My challenge to you is to attend the next Latin Anglo Alliance meeting, find out about the organization, and see what you can do to reach out and help. This meeting includes a pot luck dinner, so you can have some fun and eat too!

I don’t know how many people reading my blog  are golfers, but there is a golf outing this weekend that you could really feel good about. It is a fundraiser for the Latin Anglo Alliance Foundation. Proceeds are directed toward scholarships for kids that might otherwise not be able to go to college.

Sadly I don’t golf, and have a previous commitment for that day, so you won’t see my shining face, but I would be there if I could. This is an effort that really deserves community support.
