Claudette Konola

It is only two weeks until ballots are mailed, and a month until we will know who won all of the political races in our State. In some ways we are more than ready; in others we wish we had more time. I’m sure that is true of all campaigns. Yesterday at a debate with my opponent I mentioned that campaigns can be grueling, and one of his supporters shook her head emphatically in agreement.

One of the amusing questions in the debate was which candidate for Governor would get the vote of the candidate. I did get a chuckle out of the attendees when I said I’d go first because my choice was easier. Today I see that the Denver Post agrees with me. They endorsed the Democratic candidate for Governor because of his business “chops.” I am looking forward to being part of his team, because his economic plan is so closely aligned with what I’ve been talking about since January.

My opponent used the time I gave him to think to come up with “Colorado is not a card-check state.” Wouldn’t you know that he’d come up with a bumper sticker slogan, and bash unions all at the same time! He used that phrase to indicate that he wouldn’t be saying who he was voting for, since ballots are still secret. But, Tancrado is a really nice guy and Tancredo asked to be endorsed by King and Tancredo—well, you get the picture. He didn’t say one word about Maes.

There are at least two more Konola/King debates between now and the election. Unlike all of the other debates (There have been five so far), these will be open and free to the public. The first, sponsored by Kids Vote and the League of Women Voters, is October 11 at Grand Junction City Auditorium from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The second, sponsored by the student government at Mesa State College, is October 22, on the Mesa State College campus from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

We believe the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel will issue an endorsement in the Konola/King race some time soon. We were both interviewed by the editorial board recently. We also know that the Grand Junction Free Press is covering both candidates in their October 8 edition. They used an E-mail questionnaire to both candidates as the basis for their article. I wonder if Kelly Sloan will answer King’s questions for him…
