I know that there are some who believe that Democrats and Republicans are exactly the same, both controlled by the special interests that bankroll their elections. Maybe the phrase is about taking democracy back from special interests.
Republicans celebrated when the Supreme Court ruled that corporations and labor unions could spend unlimited amounts of money on campaigns. Democrats lamented the fact that the little guy’s voice will now be drowned out by the rich and powerful. The Colorado Supreme Court threw out the limitations on corporate and labor union contributions, but so far left in place the limits on individual contributions. On this one issue there is enough difference between Democrats and Republicans to think that they are not just two sides of the same coin. And I didn’t even bring health care reform, separation of church and state, women’s reproductive rights, or TABOR into that discussion.
Is the phrase just a rallying cry for a party that lost the last presidential election? They want to put Republicans back in office? If that is what it means, how do you explain the Tea Party movement? Tea Party activists are splitting the Republican Party, not working from within to elect candidates. The Tea Party activists can’t even seem to agree on which Republican candidate best reflects their values.
There is a celebration of increased special interests in government life, followed by physical threats to Democratic candidates who voted for health care reform, and on-going bashing of the Republican Party. Who exactly are these guys trying to take our country away from? And what are they going to do with it once they get it? Already TABOR takes almost all authority away from legislators. Do they want NO government? How is that going to work? I’m pretty smart, but I just can’t figure this one out.
